Mark Twain put it beautifully when talking about the all too consuming human emotion, regret, when he said, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did…Explore. Dream. Discover. Femina Miss India is a once in a lifetime opportunity for every young Indian girl hoping to make a positive difference in her life and of those around her. There are times when we can fall off a horse and get back on it again, practicing until we get it right. However, there are certain opportunities that come across our way where we have just one shot that can determine our life’s course and we may pass this way only once. I believe that training for Femina Miss India will change my life in so many positive ways, whether I win is something I will leave to God and Destiny. But I also believe in education and knowledge, which is why I have gone to medical school, knowing one day I will be the one to change others lives, relieve suffering, and help keep humanity alive. Winning or losing isn’t a concern when you’ve got a plan B, C, D, etc! I believe in myself and in my capabilities more than anyone else in this world, and this belief is the only strength one needs to achieve a goal in life. Becoming a doctor is my life career choice yet becoming Miss India is my life dream.
As any 12 year old girl, I was mesmerized by the beautiful evening gowns, shocked at the high heels and covered my eyes at the bikini round as I watched Miss Universe 2000. The moment I saw Lara Dutta, Miss India win the crown I knew God had put a new, beautiful dream in my heart. With or without a sense of beauty in my awkward teenage years, no one could deter me from my quest to be the next Lara, the next Miss India. Even though my dream to become Miss India blossomed in my heart and mind, it was a silent prayer from my lips. No one knew I wanted such an astonishing title as I worked my way through medical school, but I pursued my dream along with my studies because I want both in life. I know that a modeling and beauty queen life is very glamorous yet very short, but education is forever. But even though I continued my education, I did not forget my dream, my title.
Every Femina magazine I have picked up over several years has one word on the cover that every girl should remember, Believe. Besides the nitty gritty details of pageantry life, the beauty of it is the belief and faith every girl has on stage that she is the most deserving, most beautiful, and that her name is already written on the coveted crown. That’s what being a symbol of the independent, contemporary Indian woman of today means, that she is the most deserving. I believe that I’m the most deserving, and every girl vying for Miss India title should say the same about herself. That is how we will raise the bar higher for all Indian women and have them fill bigger shoes, sorry I mean High Heels!! There are so many young girls in India who dream for success, but you must also take action! There is a pageant out there that will help me gain opportunities in life to become successful, wealthy, and famous. There is a renowned pageant coach out there who is willing to train me, fight for me, and bring out the best in me. There is an inspirational book out there that will guide me to becoming the greatest me there is. But in order to have the abundance and prosperity I want in life, I had to be willing to reach for them. That is why I’ve had the dream to become Miss India. That is why I’ve had a photoshoot with a famous photographer, and that is why I’m living alone in a new city, being trained by a professional and passionate coach. Above all, I have to thank God for giving me such a big dream to cherish.
